NEWPORT — What started as a leap of faith has blossomed into a cornerstone of Newport’s creative community. Nevermore Bookstore marked its 10th anniversary Monday evening with a celebration that drew writers, longtime patrons, and literary enthusiasts alike.

“I really thought it was going to be a bust,” owner Larry Bradley admitted during the anniversary gathering. “It’s very flattering to see all the people here.”

Bradley, a University of Pittsburgh English graduate with a background in mental health, opened Nevermore in 2014 with little business experience but a clear vision. “I was very nervous,” he recalled. “I’d never had businesses before. It was definitely an eye opener.”

Two years after opening the store, Bradley established a writing group that meets Saturday mornings and Friday afternoons, which have attracted approximately 15 participants over the years. “I started the writing group because I thought that there was a need for it in the community,” Bradley explained. “I know there’s a lot of people who are creative in the area.” Bradley often recruits new members through casual conversations, extending invitations to anyone who expresses interest in writing.

The store’s influence reaches beyond Vermont’s borders. For the past four years, Bradley has supported a mobile library initiative in Nicaragua, sending books to underserved communities—a testament to his belief in the transformative power of literature.

During Monday’s celebration, which featured refreshments and complimentary gift wrapping, Bradley shared his poetry with attendees. The store offered anniversary promotions, including $10 gift certificates for every $50 spent.

Looking ahead, Bradley remains committed to Newport. To those unfamiliar with Nevermore, Bradley extends an open invitation.

“I think there’s enough in here that somebody could find something that they like,” he said. If you’re a writer, stop in and talk to Larry about getting in the writing group.

“I’m not going anywhere unless they give me the boot,” Bradley added with a laugh, embodying the spirit of commitment that has made Nevermore a cultural fixture in Newport for the past decade.
