SMITHFIELD — A nearly daylong standoff between police and a barricaded man at a residence on Elmgrove Avenue ended peacefully this morning after crisis negotiators successfully persuaded the individual to seek medical evaluation.
The Smithfield Police Department, supported by mutual aid agencies, responded to the incident yesterday involving a 59-year-old man who had experienced a change in mental status and had armed himself inside the home.
The man had isolated himself in a room, prompting concerns for his safety.
Throughout the night, officers, including members of the department’s crisis negotiation team, communicated with the man in an effort to resolve the situation without violence.
Authorities reassured the public that there was no threat to the safety of others or the surrounding community during the incident.
As of 7:15 a.m. today, the standoff concluded when the individual agreed to be transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
The situation was de-escalated without any further incident, and police are continuing their investigation.
No criminal charges have been announced at this time.
The Smithfield Police Department expressed gratitude to all the agencies that provided support during the incident.
