CHICOPEE — A routine traffic stop by Chicopee Police Department detectives led to the arrest of two Springfield men on multiple firearm and drug charges on Wednesday, Nov. 27.

Detectives were monitoring traffic on Chicopee St. when they spotted a vehicle connected to a recent shooting.

Knowing that the vehicle’s registered owner had no valid driver’s license, officers initiated a stop and identified the driver as Osvaldo Hernandez.

Upon confirming Hernandez’s lack of a license, he was taken into custody.

It was also found that the three passengers were unlicensed, and a tow truck was summoned to the scene.

While ensuring the vehicle was clear of weapons due to its link to a shooting, two passengers complied with the search, but the third, Jorge Lopez, attempted to take control of the vehicle and appeared to reach for his waistband.

Officers prevented Lopez from driving off and discovered a loaded firearm on his person.

An inventory search of the vehicle later uncovered a satchel containing narcotics.

Hernandez, 35, faces charges including unlicensed vehicle operation, cocaine trafficking, and possession of a Class A drug.

Lopez, 37, was charged with possession of a large-capacity firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, trafficking in fentanyl, and additional firearm and drug offenses.

He also faces charges for resisting arrest, kidnapping, intimidation, and assault with a dangerous weapon.
