Thomaston police warn of phishing scam posing as local bank

1 min read

THOMASTON — Thomaston Police Department issued a scam alert to residents after detecting a fraudulent message claiming to be from Kennebec Saving Bank, a well-regarded financial institution based in Augusta.

The scam involves a message sent from a phone number with a 857 area code, which is not local to Maine but rather belongs to counties in Massachusetts.

The message prompts recipients to click on a link, which police say could lead to theft of personal data, financial deception, or malware infection.

Authorities noted that the fraudulent message contained a link ending with the domain ‘.to’, indicating it originated from the Kingdom of Tonga, despite a misleading ‘.us’ placed in front to appear legitimate.

The Thomaston Police urge the community to exercise caution and avoid clicking on links from unrecognized senders or entities.
