CENTRAL FALLS — Central Falls Police Department is cautioning local residents about a burgeoning scam where fraudsters impersonate lawyers and falsely claim that a grandchild has been arrested, attempting to coerce money for supposed fines.
Authorities detailed that the scammers contact grandparents pretending to be legal representatives, urgently requesting money to cover the grandchild’s legal expenses or fines.
The method of payment often suggested includes Bitcoin, other forms of electronic funds transfer, or cash.
The police are emphasizing that the department does not conduct over-the-phone solicitations for payment of fines, nor would they request Bitcoin or any other electronic transfer of funds.
Residents receiving such calls are advised to immediately disconnect and directly contact the Central Falls Police Department at (401) 727-7411 to report the incident and verify any claims.
Officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and protect personal and financial information.
Under no circumstances should residents provide sensitive details over the phone to unsolicited callers, regardless of the urgency or authority they claim to have.
