DUMMERSTON — A single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning claimed the life of a Brattleboro resident on US Route 5.

At about 8:48 a.m., Vermont State Police responded to the scene near 2179 US Route 5 where they discovered a 2014 Subaru Impreza had gone off the west side of the road and struck a tree.

Thomas Stockton Jr., 32, of Brattleboro, was identified as the driver and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stockton, who was not wearing a seat belt, was the only occupant of the vehicle, which suffered extensive damage and was considered totaled.

Clear and cold conditions with dry roadways were reported at the time of the accident.

Investigators indicated that Stockton failed to maintain his lane, leading to the fatal incident.
