Windsor County Sheriff warns of phone scam using deputies’ names

1 min read

CHESTER — The Windsor County Sheriff’s Department issued a public warning Tuesday about a wave of fraudulent phone calls made by scammers impersonating law enforcement officers, attempting to extort money from residents.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, individuals have reported receiving calls from impostors claiming to be deputies.

The callers allege that the recipients have missed court dates, failed to comply with sex offender registry requirements, or shirked jury duty obligations.

The scammers then threaten arrest unless the victims pay substantial fines immediately.

Authorities have clarified that these calls are not legitimate and that the department will never solicit money over the phone.

The scammers have been using the real names of deputies to lend credibility to their scheme, making the fraud more convincing.

The Sheriff’s Department is urging the public to remain vigilant and to never give out money or personal information over the phone without verifying the authenticity of the call.

Residents are encouraged to hang up and contact the official office or dispatch number to confirm the identity of the caller.
