WORCESTER — After a ShotSpotter activation alerted them to gunfire near the I-290 highway on Nov. 26, Worcester Police Crime Gun Intelligence Unit officers, with help from the ATF, charged a local man with possession of a machine gun.
The incident, which occurred around 12:24 a.m., led officers to a South Harlem St address where they executed a search warrant.
On Nov. 27 at approximately 5 p.m., they discovered a handgun with a conversion device capable of automatic fire, commonly referred to as a “Glock switch.”
Kavont Kelly, who had been arrested earlier in the day for car break-ins on Salisbury St, is now facing multiple charges.
These include Possession of a Machine Gun, Possession of a Loaded Machine Gun, Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm, and several other firearms-related offenses.
Kelly is also charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Dwelling, and Use of a Firearm While Committing a Felony.
The arrest highlights the ongoing efforts of the Worcester Police Department to combat gun violence and remove illegal firearms from the streets.
