DOVER — Chief William Breault of the Dover Police Department announced the arrest of John L. Pownall, 57, and Ashley S. Gustafson, 36, of 24 Olde Madbury Lane on Nov. 28.
The arrests came after the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert on Nov. 27 for Pownall and Gustafson.
Pownall had escaped from a local hospital and removed an ankle-monitoring device with Gustafson’s help, according to authorities.
They were last seen leaving in a white Kia sedan.
At about 8:12 p.m., a Dover police officer spotted the Kia on Central Avenue and attempted a traffic stop.
The car sped away, prompting the officer to end the pursuit for safety reasons.
Soon after, the vehicle was found abandoned on Highland Street.
Dover police, assisted by the New Hampshire State Police, cordoned off the area and launched a search with a K9 unit.
The suspects were discovered hiding under equipment in a nearby yard and were taken into custody without further incident.
Pownall faces charges including escape, criminal trespass, and resisting arrest or detention.
Gustafson has been charged with disobeying an officer, reckless driving, driving after revocation or suspension, open container, criminal trespass, resisting arrest or detention, receiving stolen property, and an existing warrant from Rockingham County.
Both were held in preventative detention and are scheduled for arraignment on Nov. 29.
The Dover Police Department is seeking additional information on the incident and requests that anyone with information contact them at 603-742-4646 to speak with the on-duty shift commander.
