ROCKLAND — A routine traffic stop turned into a chase and subsequent arrest early Wednesday morning when a Rockland Police sergeant attempted to pull over a non-responsive driver at a traffic light.
At around 2:25 a.m., Sergeant Joshua Gilcoine noticed a gray Mazda stopped at the intersection of West Water St. and Plain St. despite the traffic lights cycling through.
Upon activating his emergency lights and approaching the vehicle, Gilcoine found the driver, who appeared to be unconscious with the vehicle in drive.
The situation escalated when the driver, later identified as Cory Wilson, 45, of Brockton, fled the initial stop, ran a red light, and led officers on a one-mile pursuit.
Wilson eventually exited his moving vehicle, which crashed into a mailbox, and attempted to escape on foot.
Officer Rafael Guzman and other responding officers apprehended Wilson after a brief struggle.
A subsequent search revealed drug paraphernalia and quantities of substances believed to be crack cocaine and fentanyl.
Wilson faces multiple charges including trafficking in fentanyl, possession of a Class B drug, OUI drugs, and resisting arrest, among other traffic violations.
He also had three outstanding warrants related to drug offenses and driving with a suspended license.
Wilson was taken to a local hospital for evaluation following his arrest.
