HOPKINTON — Police are alerting residents to a phone scam where callers, posing as representatives of Rhode Island Energy, are attempting to obtain personal and financial information by threatening to shut off power.
Multiple reports came in this morning from community members who received these fraudulent calls.
The scammers informed residents that their electricity services were at risk of being disconnected unless they provided sensitive information.
Most of the targeted individuals did not fall for the scam, opting to verify the claims directly with Rhode Island Energy.
The utility company confirmed that the calls were not legitimate and that they were part of a scam attempt.
Authorities are urging the public to be cautious and not to disclose any personal details to unsolicited callers.
They recommend that if residents receive such a call, they should hang up and contact the company or entity using officially listed contact information.
