St. Johnsbury deaths ruled self-defense, no charges filed

ST. JOHNSBURY — The Vermont State Police has concluded its investigation into a deadly July incident at a Cottage Street residence, where two St. Johnsbury residents were killed.

Authorities determined that Nicholas Johnson, 42, forcibly entered the home and stabbed Ben Lyons, 21, who succumbed to his injuries.

During the altercation, Johnson also attacked Patrick Mayhew, 33, and Jennifer Bradley, 44.

In an act of self-defense, Mayhew fatally shot Johnson.

The case was reviewed by the Caledonia County State’s Attorney’s Office.

State’s Attorney Jessica Zaleski announced her decision not to file any charges, effectively closing the case.
