Man arrested on suspicion of DUI after Derby crash

DERBY — A two-vehicle collision on US Route 5 near Shattuck Hill Road led to the arrest of a Holland man on suspicion of his fourth DUI offense.

Vermont State Police responded to the incident at 6:19 p.m.

Monday, where they found that a Honda Acty driven by Daniel Hawley, 43, had rear-ended a Toyota Highlander that was stopped in the left turn lane.

The driver of the Highlander, Brett Schauer, 29, of Albany, was wearing a seatbelt and no injuries were reported.

During the investigation, VSP observed signs of impairment from Hawley.

After field sobriety testing, he was taken into custody and transported to the Derby Barracks for processing.

Hawley was lodged for lack of $2,500 bail as ordered by the court and is cited to appear in Orleans Superior Court on Tuesday at 1 p.m. to answer to the charge of DUI #4.

The Highlander was driven from the scene while Hawley’s vehicle sustained front-end damage.
