SHELDON — A local firearms retailer faces charges after failing to adhere to background check procedures, Vermont State Police reported Monday.

Matthew Williams, 45, owner of Deep Woods Mafia on 833 Machia Road, was cited for violating firearms transfer regulations.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives discovered the infractions during a routine inspection, which revealed Williams had not waited the required seven business days after a delayed response from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).

Under Vermont Title 13 V.S.A. Section 4019 (d)(2), dealers are prohibited from transferring a firearm without receiving a unique identification number from NICS within seven business days.

Violation of these provisions can result in criminal charges.

The case was reviewed by the Franklin County State’s Attorney’s Office, which issued a criminal citation for Williams.

He is scheduled to appear in the Franklin County Superior Court – Criminal Division on Jan. 14 at 8:30 a.m. to respond to the charge.
