Bangor fire claims life of elderly woman

BANGOR — A fire in Bangor early Monday morning claimed the life of an elderly woman, authorities reported.

The Bangor Fire Department and Bangor Police Department responded to a 911 call at approximately 5:22 a.m. on Nov. 25 reporting a structure fire at 62 Fairways.

Upon arrival, firefighters quickly suppressed the blaze that had engulfed a single-family dwelling.

One victim, tentatively identified as 84-year-old Carla Durgin, the homeowner, was found deceased inside the residence.

Following protocol for fatal fire incidents, the Office of the State Fire Marshal was summoned to investigate the origin and cause of the fire.

A team of investigators from the Fire Marshal’s Office is working alongside the Bangor Fire Department at the scene.

The body of the victim has been transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta for an autopsy to confirm positive identification.

The Bangor Fire Department received assistance from the Air National Guard, which serves as their closest mutual aid department.
