WETHERSFIELD — A tractor-trailer carrying 7,500 gallons of fuel caught fire Friday morning on Interstate 91, prompting a temporary highway shutdown and multi-agency response.

Connecticut State Police from Troop H-Hartford were dispatched at 7:42 a.m. to I-91 northbound near exit 24 in Wethersfield for reports of a tractor-trailer fire.

The cab was fully engulfed when responders arrived.

The driver escaped without injury, according to police.

Wethersfield and Rocky Hill fire departments responded to extinguish the blaze.

Troopers closed I-91 in both directions and blocked incoming traffic from Route 3 to I-91 southbound due to the hazardous cargo.

Authorities reopened I-91 southbound after the fire was extinguished.

The left two lanes of I-91 northbound were also reopened, though the scene remained active as of Friday afternoon.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and Department of Transportation were notified and responded to the scene.

The Connecticut State Police Fire & Explosives Investigation Unit is assisting with the investigation.
