SEEKONK — A man accused of assaulting a woman with a firearm at a local motel was arrested Friday after a daylong search by police.
The incident began when Seekonk Police patrol units responded to a 911 hangup call at Motel 6 on Fall River Avenue at about 1:30 a.m. Officers found a woman in a hallway who reported being assaulted by a man with a gun.
The suspect, identified as Corey Soares, 37, had fled the scene before police arrived.
The Seekonk Police Detective Division took over the investigation, securing and executing a search warrant for the motel room.
They discovered a loaded Smith & Wesson semi-automatic handgun.
An arrest warrant for Soares was issued through Taunton District Court.
Later that day, at around 2 p.m., Patrolman Dudley spotted Soares entering a Panera Bread on Highland Avenue.
Dudley approached and confirmed the individual’s identity, arresting Soares without incident.
Soares, originally from Punta Gorda, Florida, had left the motel driving a 2001 green Ford F150 pickup truck with Florida license plate 33EKYT, which remains unaccounted for.
Authorities have urged anyone with information about the vehicle’s whereabouts to contact the Seekonk Police Department at 508-336-8123.
Soares is facing charges including assault with a dangerous weapon, domestic assault and battery, and domestic strangulation or suffocation.
