ISLAND POND — A VFW post housed in a former one-room schoolhouse was destroyed by fire early Wednesday in Island Pond, officials said.

Brighton Fire and Rescue responded to VFW Post 2309 on Fitzgerald Avenue at around 6 a.m., finding the structure fully engulfed in flames with the roof beginning to collapse, according to Fire Chief Rick Hannux.

Firefighters demolished the building with an excavator to extinguish the blaze after initial suppression efforts.

No injuries were reported as the building was unoccupied at the time.

Investigators believe the fire started when mice, seeking winter shelter, chewed through electrical wiring in the walls.

The fire is not considered suspicious, Hannux said.
