Wells apartment fire traced to improper disposal of smoking materials

WELLS — A fire that engulfed a multi-unit apartment complex on Sanford Road Monday evening has been attributed to careless disposal of smoking materials, the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office reported.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at approximately 7:39 p.m. after several units within the complex were reported to be involved in the fire.

The Wells Fire Chief confirmed that all residents were able to evacuate the building without injury.

Investigators from the Fire Marshal’s Office (FMO) and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) arrived on the scene to process the area and conduct interviews.

Their investigation concluded that the fire originated outside the building near a porch.

Authorities are reminding residents of the importance of proper disposal of smoking materials to prevent similar incidents.
