Springfield police arrest man with firearm in park after hours

SPRINGFIELD — A routine patrol in Blunt Park led to the arrest of a 25-year-old man after Springfield Police Officers found him in a vehicle with a loaded firearm early this morning.

At approximately 3:35 a.m., officers encountered Hector Rodriguez in the park, which was closed to the public at the time.

Rodriguez had an active arrest warrant and was taken into custody without incident.

Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered a loaded firearm along with additional ammunition.

Rodriguez, who has a prior firearms conviction from Greenfield District Court, now faces multiple charges, including carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, and firearm violation with one prior violent or drug crime.

Rodriguez is also charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition without a Firearms Identification (FID) Card for a subsequent offense, and trespassing.

Additional charges include operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, driving an uninsured vehicle, receiving stolen property valued at less than $1,200, and a number plate violation to conceal identification.
