ROCKY HILL — Rocky Hill Police Department is on high alert after a scam targeting local residents came to light, with imposters posing as law enforcement officials to demand payments and threaten legal action.
The scam came to the department’s attention when a victim received a call on Nov. 19, fraudulently made through the RHPD’s non-emergency line.
The caller falsely claimed to be associated with Chief of Police Brian Klett and demanded payment in the form of gift cards.
Authorities have identified that these scammers often pose as police officers or government officials, falsely alleging that the victim has outstanding fines or legal issues that require immediate payment.
The scammers have been known to request payment by gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers.
The Rocky Hill Police Department emphasizes that they will never solicit payment or personal financial information over the telephone.
To combat this fraudulent activity, residents are advised to take precautionary measures such as refusing to share personal or financial information with unknown callers or online entities, hanging up immediately on anyone who claims to be a law enforcement official demanding payment, and verifying any dubious calls by directly contacting the Rocky Hill Police Department at 860-258-7640.
Victims or those targeted by the scam are encouraged to report the incident to the Rocky Hill Police Department, which is actively investigating these fraudulent activities and working to protect the community from further victimization.
