CARIBOU — Maine State Police arrested a 75-year-old man early Tuesday after he was reportedly driving the wrong way on Interstate 95, leading to a police vehicle intervening to stop his car.
Troopers from Troop F were dispatched around midnight to reports of a driver heading south in the northbound lanes near Mile Marker 266.
Trooper Noah Castonguay located the vehicle, a 2019 Honda Accord, around Mile Marker 281 and attempted to stop it using lights and sirens.
Despite the trooper’s efforts, the driver, identified as James Burch of Freeport, continued toward Castonguay’s position.
Castonguay narrowly avoided a head-on collision by swerving away and then pursued Burch, catching up with him near Mile Marker 286 in Oakfield.
To prevent further danger, Castonguay used his cruiser to strike the Accord on the passenger side as it passed through a crossover, effectively bringing the vehicle to a halt.
Burch was taken into custody without incident and transported to Aroostook County Jail.
He faces charges of Criminal OUI, Aggravated Driving to Endanger, and Passing a Roadblock.
Both Castonguay and Burch were unharmed in the collision.
