BOSTON — A routine traffic stop in Charlestown late Thursday night led to the arrest of a 17-year-old juvenile and the recovery of a loaded 9mm handgun, Boston Police Department officials reported.
At about 11 p.m., officers were patrolling the area of Polk St. toward Bunker Hill St. when they observed a vehicle fail to adhere to a stop sign and speed through the neighborhood.
The vehicle continued to disregard another stop sign before officers managed to pull it over at the intersection of Chelsea St. and Vine St.
Upon approaching the vehicle, officers identified the driver and passenger and proceeded to conduct an investigation.
Suspecting the possibility of weapons, the officers ordered both occupants to exit for a pat-frisk.
The passenger, however, resisted and attempted to flee after placing his hands inside his sweatshirt pocket.
After a brief struggle, officers subdued the passenger and discovered a black, 9mm Ruger Max-9 concealed in his sweatshirt pocket, loaded with one round in the chamber and nine in the magazine.
The juvenile was detained and is scheduled to be arraigned in Charlestown District Court on charges including unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, unlawful possession of ammunition, and resisting arrest.
The driver received a Massachusetts Uniform Citation for two counts of failure to stop at a stop sign and speeding.
