SHREWSBURY — A routine check by a Shrewsbury police officer led to a high-speed chase and subsequent arrest of a man driving a U-Haul truck filled with suspected stolen goods on Nov. 12.
At around 8:42 p.m., Officer Bourette spotted the vehicle in a CVS pharmacy lot on Boston Turnpike and discovered it had evaded Massachusetts State Police the previous night.
After witnessing several traffic violations, Bourette attempted a traffic stop, but the driver sped off, leading to a chase through Shrewsbury streets.
During the pursuit, the truck’s rear door swung open, spilling contents onto the road.
Officers L. Sloan, Thibodeau, and Svendsen deployed tire deflation devices on Boston Turnpike near the Shrewsbury/Northborough line, which partially disabled the truck.
Despite flat tires, the driver persisted until crashing into a utility pole near a Target store in Westborough, causing live power lines to block the road.
Police arrested 47-year-old Stephen Dupont of Millbury, charging him with failure to stop for police, assault with a dangerous weapon (motor vehicle), receiving stolen property, conspiracy to commit a crime (shoplifting), negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and multiple civil motor vehicle infractions.
Two female passengers in the truck will receive criminal summonses for receiving stolen property and conspiracy to commit a crime (shoplifting).
Their identities are not disclosed pending arraignment.
