ST. JOHNSBURY — A 24-year-old Waterford man was charged with simple assault and a hate crime following an incident outside a local bar, police said.

Ryan Ware was accused of assaulting multiple people and using racial slurs during a fight that broke out early Nov. 10 at the Whiskey Den on Eastern Avenue.

St. Johnsbury police officers responded to reports of an 8 to 10 person altercation around 1:24 a.m. Upon arrival, they found about eight individuals arguing outside 36 Eastern Avenue, just down the street from the bar.

Witnesses reported assaults and provided accounts leading to Ware’s identification.

Following an investigation, Ware voluntarily appeared at the police station on Nov. 18, where he was fingerprinted and released on a citation.

A mug shot was taken at the time of processing.

Ware is scheduled for arraignment on Dec. 23 at 8:30 a.m. in Caledonia Superior Court.

He was not lodged in jail and no bail was set.
