Charleston man arrested after hit-and-run incident

CHARLESTON — A pedestrian was injured in a hit-and-run traffic crash on Bradford Road, leading to the arrest of a local man, authorities reported.

Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Nov. 17 after receiving reports of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

The driver had fled the area before deputies arrived, leaving the pedestrian with minor injuries.

Following the initial investigation and interviews with witnesses, deputies conducted a search and located the suspect vehicle on Dover Road in Charleston.

Gary Smith Jr., 33, of Bradford was identified as the driver of the vehicle.

Smith Jr. was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court.

He has also been charged with failing to report a personal injury crash, a Class D misdemeanor.

The Charleston Fire Department and Mayo Ambulance assisted deputies at the scene of the crash.
