Suspect arrested in Montpelier double homicide

MONTPELIER — Vermont State Police have arrested Matthew Gomes, 29, on Friday night in relation to the deaths of two adults at their shared residence on Gallison Hill Road.

Gomes, a Montpelier resident, is believed to be related to the victims, a man and a woman, who were also occupants of the house.

The identities of the deceased are pending confirmation through autopsies scheduled to be conducted at the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington.

The autopsies will also establish the cause and manner of the deaths.

The suspect is set to be arraigned on an aggravated murder charge at the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court in Barre at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18.

Following his arrest, Gomes was ordered to be held without bail until his initial court appearance.

The arrest occurred after Gomes contacted authorities around 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, confessing to harming his relatives and requesting police and ambulance services at the residence.

The Vermont State Police, who have been investigating the incident, determined that the attack happened in the early hours of Friday.

As the investigation continues, the scene remains active with State Police processing the house and vicinity for further evidence.
