RUMFORD — The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office arrested a local man Thursday evening on charges related to a structure fire earlier this month that resulted in three counts of aggravated attempted murder and arson.
Billy Morvent, 59, was taken into custody after an investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office (FMO) into a Nov. 5 fire at a residence on 61 state Route 232.
The fire, which prompted a response from both the Rumford Fire Department and the FMO, led to Morvent’s initial detainment by the Rumford Police.
Following the incident, Morvent was hospitalized for medical treatment.
The FMO, in collaboration with the Rumford Police and the Oxford County District Attorney’s Office, later charged him with three counts of aggravated attempted murder (Class A), one count of arson (Class A), three counts of criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon (Class C), and one count of aggravated criminal mischief (Class C).
Currently still in the hospital, Morvent is scheduled to appear for his arraignment via video conferencing this afternoon.
