Glover stormwater project aims to protect Barton River water quality

1 min read

GLOVER — The Memphremagog Watershed Association has completed designs for green stormwater infrastructure improvements aimed at protecting the Barton River and Lake Memphremagog, with construction planned for 2025.

The project, developed in partnership with the Town of Glover and Glover Community School, will install rain gardens, native plantings, and stormwater treatment systems at the town office, fire department, library, and elementary school campus. This will stop sediment, nutrients, oil and grease, and other pollutants from entering these waterways.

“Currently, stormwater from rooftops, parking lots, and lawns flow directly into a perennial tributary or the Barton River as it flows through the village of Glover,” Kendall Lambert with MWA said.

Holly Greenleaf of Greenleaf Designs, LLC developed retrofits that will modify existing drainage practices while enhancing public spaces with shade trees, accessible steps and ramps, educational signage, and beautification elements.

The project, first proposed in the 2016 Memphremagog Stormwater Master Plan, received funding through the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation Clean Water Initiative Program.
