SPRINGFIELD — In response to a series of skimming device discoveries, the Springfield Police Department is cautioning local businesses to remain alert for fraudulent devices attached to payment systems.
The SPD is emphasizing the importance of daily inspections for skimmers on point-of-sale terminals, ATMs, and gas station pumps.
The alert follows the detection of four skimming devices during the last weekend at various convenience stores within the city.
In each instance, either an employee discovered the device or a suspect was seen retrieving it.
Authorities have released an image of the suspect reportedly seen removing a skimmer from a point-of-sale machine.
The Springfield Police Detective Bureau is seeking assistance from the public to identify the individual involved.
Tips can be provided by calling the Detective Bureau at 413-787-6355 or anonymously through the Text-A-Tip service by texting CRIMES (2-7-4-6-3-7), typing SOLVE, followed by the information.
The police department also recommends customers exercise caution by opting to use credit transactions over debit ones, especially at non-bank ATMs, which FICO has indicated are the sites of 60% of skimming incidents.
Before using a machine, a quick inspection is advised to spot any signs of tampering.
A loose or damaged card reader, or a keypad that feels thick or difficult to press, may indicate the presence of a skimmer.
Additionally, when entering a PIN, customers should shield the keypad to obstruct any hidden cameras.
If a skimming device is found, the public is urged to inform a staff member or contact the police immediately.
