Machias police seize fake bills marked for ‘motion picture purposes’

1 min read

MACHIAS — In a recent operation, the Machias Police Department confiscated a significant quantity of counterfeit currency, urging residents and businesses to remain vigilant when accepting cash.

During the arrest, officers found counterfeit $20 and $100 bills that, at first glance, appeared authentic.

However, closer examination revealed that the front of the bills bore the inscription “for motion picture purposes,” while the phrase “in props we trust” was printed on the back, distinguishing them from legitimate U.S. currency.

The Machias Police Department is warning the community to carefully inspect any cash transactions.

While the fake bills could easily deceive an unsuspecting individual, the clear markings indicate they are not legal tender but are instead designed for use as props in films and other entertainment mediums.

Local businesses and citizens are encouraged to examine cash closely, especially $20 and $100 denominations, and to report any suspicious currency to the Machias Police Department immediately.
