OAK BLUFFS — A routine motor vehicle stop led to the arrest of a man for cocaine trafficking late Friday night, according to the Oak Bluffs Police Department.
At around 11:20 p.m. on Nov. 8, patrol officers noticed a BMW X3 with a faulty headlight on Beach Road near Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.
A check revealed the license plate was registered to a Jeep Cherokee, not the BMW.
David Lee Wells, the driver, was informed the vehicle would be towed and was issued a summons for various motor vehicle violations.
Wells then walked to an Uber a short distance away.
During an inventory of the BMW, officers found a plastic bag with a white substance confirmed as approximately 28.5 grams of cocaine.
Wells was detained in the Uber, given Miranda Warnings, and subsequently arrested for trafficking cocaine, in addition to the motor vehicle charges.
This follows Wells’ prior arrests, including a May 16 incident involving cocaine trafficking and a June 4 assault charge.
He was arraigned today in Edgartown District Court, with bail revoked.
Wells remains in custody pending trial.
