ESSEX JUNCTION — Following a thorough investigation, Essex police have arrested a suspect in connection with the Key Bank robbery on Nov. 5 and several other bank heists in Chittenden County.

Adam L. Champagne, 42, of Burlington, was identified by the Essex Police Department and captured with the assistance of local and federal law enforcement on Nov. 7.

Detectives from Essex Police Department, along with officers from South Burlington, Burlington, and Winooski Police Departments and FBI agents, executed a search warrant at a Burlington residence where Champagne was staying.

Evidence found during the search linked Champagne to the bank robberies.

Champagne was apprehended later that day on Riverside Ave in Burlington on a federal indictment warrant.

He was indicted by the US Attorney’s Office on a count of bank robbery for his involvement in a South Burlington robbery.

He was then lodged at the Northwest Correctional Facility.

On Nov. 8, Champagne was arraigned in federal court and held on bank robbery charges.

The Essex Police Department has extended gratitude to the local and federal agencies that contributed to the investigation.

The initial robbery at KeyBank, located at 40 Pearl Street, occurred when a male suspect claiming to have an explosive device demanded and received an undisclosed sum of money.

The suspect, then described as a slender white male between 5’9″ and 6 feet tall, fled the scene on foot.
