TRUMBULL — A Bridgeport man has been arrested in connection with a brazen jewelry store theft at Trumbull Mall, the Trumbull Police Department announced Thursday.

Javon Thorbourne, 30, of Hancock Avenue, is accused of being one of three masked thieves who carried out a “smash and grab” at Kay’s Jewelry store in April.

The suspects shattered glass display cases with hammers and stole jewelry valued at several thousand dollars in front of shocked shoppers.

The trio fled on foot and escaped in a dark four-door sedan, later recovered by authorities.

Thorbourne was identified through an extensive investigation involving evidence collection, witness interviews, and vehicle tracing.

The incident, which occurred on April 17 at about 1:45 p.m., initially sparked fear among mall-goers who mistook the sound of breaking glass for gunfire.

Police later confirmed that no weapons were used and no injuries occurred.

Detectives reported over $85,000 in stolen jewelry and are still working to identify the remaining suspects.

Thorbourne, who was already in custody for unrelated charges, now faces additional counts of Larceny in the 1st degree, Conspiracy to Commit Larceny in the 1st degree, Criminal Mischief in the 1st degree, and Breach of Peace.

He was held on a $250,000 bond and appeared for arraignment in Bridgeport Superior Court on Nov. 7.

The Trumbull Police Department is urging anyone with more information on the heist to come forward and contact them at (203) 261-3665.
