HYANNIS — A 31-year-old Hyannis man was arrested Thursday for allegedly stabbing a teenage girl in an unprovoked attack at a local Dollar Tree store.
Nikolas Rescigno was taken into custody at 12:38 p.m. after Barnstable Police officers responded to the incident.
The victim, who was accompanied by her mother at the time of the attack, was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.
Witnesses reported that Rescigno approached the girl from behind in the store’s foyer and stabbed her without warning.
He remained at the scene until police arrived and surrendered the knife to a bystander who intervened.
Rescigno, who has no known connection to the victim, was booked at the Barnstable Police facility on charges of Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon with Serious Bodily Injury.
He also had an outstanding warrant related to a previous incident involving a knife at the Cape Cod Mall in May.
The bail magistrate set Rescigno’s bail at $5,000.
His arraignment is scheduled for Friday in Barnstable District Court.
