NORTH SMITHFIELD — The North Smithfield Police Department issued an alert Monday warning the elderly community about a bail bondsman scam proliferating across Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Authorities have received multiple reports of a scam involving phone calls from someone claiming to be a bail bondsman, demanding thousands of dollars while asserting that a loved one is in jail.
The scammer concocts a narrative that the family member has been arrested following an accident they supposedly caused.
In addition to these calls, there have been sightings of a white male with a skinny build appearing at the homes of elderly individuals, presenting the same fraudulent story.
The police urge anyone who has experienced this scam or encountered an individual making such requests for money to contact their local police department immediately to verify the claims.
The North Smithfield Police Department is actively investigating these incidents and is seeking to prevent further exploitation of vulnerable community members.
