RUMFORD — An armed individual is in custody following an active shooter situation that occurred Tuesday evening on State Route 232 in the Rumford Corner village area.
The Rumford Police Department, led by Chief Tony Milligan, reported that officers responded to calls of an active shooter at about 8 p.m. between East Bethel Road and South Rumford Road.
The suspect allegedly fired multiple shots, crashed a vehicle into a home at 61 State Route 232, set the building on fire, and shot additional rounds into the residence before fleeing on foot.
After a search, police located the suspect around 1 a.m., suffering from a life-threatening, self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Emergency services transported the individual to Rumford Hospital, with a subsequent transfer to Maine Medical Center for advanced care.
There were no other injuries reported as a result of the incident.
The previously issued shelter-in-place order has been lifted, and State Route 232 has been reopened to the public.
Authorities are still at the scene conducting a thorough investigation.
The Rumford Police Department expects to release further details later in the day.
