FARMINGTON — A fatal collision between a tractor trailer and a pedestrian occurred on Main Street in Farmington at approximately 10:30 a.m. Monday, officials reported.
The Franklin County Regional Communications Center received an emergency call regarding the crash in front of the US Post Office at 196 Main Street.
Responding to the incident were Farmington Police Department, Farmington Fire Department, and NorthStar Ambulance.
Investigation revealed that Marcus J. Campbell, 26, of Gray, was driving a red 2018 Kenworth W900 tractor trailer northbound on Main Street.
The vehicle, owned by MCW Trucking of Durham, Maine, was stopped for a pedestrian in the crosswalk when Robert J.
Leso, 82, of Chesterville, attempted to cross the street.
According to officials, Leso walked in front of the truck from the passenger side and was hit by the vehicle’s front tire.
Witnesses at the scene attempted to aid Leso but were unable to revive him.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
After reviewing traffic camera footage and witness statements, authorities found no indication of error by Campbell, and no charges are anticipated in connection with the crash.
The investigation is ongoing to determine all contributing factors.
Following the incident, Police Chief Kenneth Charles emphasized the importance of vigilance on the part of both drivers and pedestrians, urging them to make eye contact and be aware of their surroundings to prevent such tragedies.
Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement joined the response because of the commercial vehicle involved.
Farmington Public Works also contributed with traffic control.
The accident resulted in Main Street being closed for about four hours for cleanup and investigation.
