Somerville sees spike in thefts, assaults

SOMERVILLE — A series of property crimes and assaults have kept Somerville police busy, with multiple incidents reported over the past week, officials said.

Police took three reports of scooter thefts at the local high school between Oct. 23 and Oct. 24.

Juvenile suspects have been identified in the thefts with case numbers 24066675, 24066760, and 24067553.

Two separate assaults were reported on Oct. 21 and Oct. 20.

The first incident, case number 24065716, occurred at approximately 10:10 a.m. on Grand Union Blvd, where a male suspect allegedly spit on a woman and several others.

The second assault, case number 24065429, happened around 12:09 a.m. on College Ave, involving a male suspect who brandished a knife and charged at a victim.

Residential and commercial break-ins have also been reported.

On Oct. 18 at about 2:14 p.m., officers responded to a past breaking and entering on Ellsworth St, case number 24065075, where a broken bedroom door was discovered, though no items were reported missing.

Another breaking and entering occurred at a construction site on Somerville Ave, on Oct. 23 at around 1:35 p.m., case number 24066338.

The reporting party claimed a male suspect stole several tools from the site.

An arrest was made on the afternoon of Oct. 23, case number 24066368, when officers on patrol near Statue Park observed a male brandishing a baton and threatening people around 4:45 p.m.

On Oct. 28, at approximately 11:51 a.m., a bank robbery took place on Cutter Ave, case number 24067483.

A male suspect handed a teller a note demanding money, fled with cash, and left in a vehicle.

Earlier, on Oct. 21, around 2:00 a.m., officers investigated a shots fired report on Memorial Rd, case number 24065673.

A hollow point round and a spent casing were recovered.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police also responded to a past commercial breaking and entering on Oct. 16 at approximately 7:58 p.m., case number 24064663.

A business on Broadway reported a male suspect breaking a window and rummaging through the counter, though nothing was taken.

Several other assaults were also reported, including an incident on Oct. 25, case number 24066808, where a juvenile male tried to steal a bicycle at the high school and assaulted a staff member.

Another assault took place on Oct. 28 at about 10:38 p.m. on Broadway, case number 24067602, where a poker game turned violent, resulting in a stabbing.

In addition to these incidents, the police reported four car break-ins, five package thefts, three motor vehicle vandalisms, six vandalisms, six bike thefts, and one motor vehicle theft.

The police department urges residents to report any suspicious activity and take precautions to secure their property.
