PORTSMOUTH — A head-on crash on Interstate 95 claimed the life of one person and injured another on Wednesday evening.

State Troopers from Troop A responded to the collision on I-95 North near the Route 16 North split around 6:30 p.m. A Ford Escape, driven by Arlen Brown, 68, of Sabattus, Maine, reportedly crossed the median from the southbound lanes and collided with a Toyota Camry traveling northbound.

Brown was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Camry’s driver, Jessica Emerson, 25, of Berwick, Maine, was also taken to the same hospital with serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Both vehicles had no passengers.

The accident led to a two-hour closure of all northbound lanes on I-95 as authorities conducted an on-scene investigation and cleared the debris.

Portsmouth Police Department, Portsmouth Fire Department, New Hampshire Department of Transportation, and towing services provided assistance.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Witnesses or those with information are encouraged to contact Trooper Patrick Vetter at (603) 271-3636.
