DERBY LINE — A high-speed crash on U.S. Route 5 Tuesday evening left two people injured and destroyed two utility poles, Vermont State Police reported.
Kameron Melendez, 23, of Derby Line was traveling south near Hammer Handle Road at approximately 5:10 p.m. when his 2006 BMW 330 left the roadway, striking and snapping two utility poles. According to police he was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the crash.
Melendez and a juvenile passenger were transported to North Country Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Police believe another vehicle was traveling at high speed alongside Melendez’s car but fled the scene. According to Trooper Alford, Melendez faces charges of gross negligent operation.
