TRUMBULL — Several residents received fraudulent telephone calls Tuesday from scammers posing as Trumbull police officers, demanding money and threatening arrest, the Trumbull Police Department reported.
The calls, which involved the use of real officers’ names, claimed to be from the Trumbull “Sheriff’s” Department—a nonexistent agency in Connecticut.
The police department emphasized that legitimate law enforcement officers do not request money, gift cards, or other forms of payment to settle fines or prevent arrests.
They also do not threaten to increase fines or take someone into custody if payment is not received.
Residents are advised to be cautious and gather as much information as possible from any suspicious callers, including names, titles, phone numbers, and addresses, but not to provide personal information or make payments.
They should then contact the police to verify the legitimacy of the request or report the scam.
The Trumbull Police urge the public to stay alert and report any illegal or suspicious activities by calling (203) 261-3665 or dialing 911 for emergencies.
