SHREWSBURY — A routine motor vehicle stop for an equipment violation escalated into a high-speed chase and subsequent arrest of a Webster man on a slew of charges, including firearms offenses, police said.

At approximately 6:38 p.m. on Oct. 24, Sergeant Caviston and Officer Juaire of the Shrewsbury Police Department stopped a grey 2016 Lexus on Hartford Turnpike Eastbound near the intersection of Rt. 140.

While speaking with the driver, identified as 33-year-old Tarrell Berry of Webster, the officers spotted multiple open alcohol containers and a black fanny pack on the passenger seat.

When Berry hesitated to comply with a request to exit the vehicle, an officer opened the door, prompting Berry to accelerate away.

The officers pursued the Lexus east on Rt. 20.

The chase ended when Berry attempted to merge onto Rt. 9 Eastbound in Northborough and collided with another vehicle, disabling his car.

Berry was removed from the Lexus and after a brief struggle, was detained by Sgt. Caviston and Officer Juaire. A search ensued for the fanny pack, which officers suspected had been discarded during the pursuit.

Assisted by K-9 units from Milford, Charlton, and the Massachusetts State Police, the bag was recovered about a mile from the initial traffic stop.

Inside, police found a loaded 9MM handgun with 11 rounds of ammunition and a defaced serial number.

Berry, who does not have a firearms license, was charged with failure to stop for police, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a large capacity firearm, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, resisting arrest, open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and multiple civil motor vehicle infractions, including speeding and violations of marked lanes, red light, and two equipment offenses.
