THOMASTON — A 55-year-old transient man was arrested Wednesday on multiple charges including theft, burglary, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, Thomaston police said.
David Atwood was taken into custody at a McDonald’s restaurant after allegedly stealing a vehicle from a Lowe’s parking lot on New County Road earlier in the day.
Police said Atwood is also suspected of burglarizing an Enterprise car rental location and stealing a golf cart from the property.
Witnesses reported seeing Atwood return the stolen vehicle to the Lowe’s parking lot and flee on foot.
The vehicle’s owner reported significant damage and missing cash upon its return.
Atwood faces three counts of theft, one count of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, one count of criminal mischief, and one count of burglary.
Investigators from the Office of the State Fire Marshal interviewed Atwood as a person of interest in recent suspicious fires in the area.
That investigation remains active.
Atwood is being held at the Knox County Jail.
Police remind residents to remove keys and lock vehicles when leaving them unattended.
