Auto burglaries prompt police warning in Putnam

1 min read

PUTNAM — Multiple auto burglaries and a vehicle theft in the north end of Putnam have prompted police to urge residents to lock their cars and remove valuables.

The Putnam Police Department responded Thursday morning to several reports of vehicle break-ins that occurred overnight.

A car was also stolen from Woodstock Avenue.

Most of the vehicles entered were left unlocked, police said.

In one instance, a car window was smashed and a purse left in view was stolen.

The stolen vehicle had been left unlocked with keys inside.

Hartford police later located the car but were unable to stop it after a pursuit.

The vehicle remains unrecovered.

“I cannot stress enough, these were crimes of opportunity,” a police spokesperson said. “If you eliminate the opportunity by locking your vehicles, removing your keys and other valuables, you significantly reduce the chance of being victimized.”

Police are asking anyone who witnessed suspicious activity overnight Wednesday into Thursday or has video footage to contact the department at 860-928-6565.

Tips can be submitted anonymously at 860-963-0000 or via email through the department’s website.
