Oxford County Sheriff’s Office warns against phone scam demanding money for warrants, bail

1 min read

RUMFORD — Oxford County Sheriff’s Office issued a scam alert Monday after receiving multiple calls reporting a fraudulent scheme involving demands for money related to warrants or bail.

According to authorities, scammers are impersonating law enforcement officials from the Rumford Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office, falsely claiming that individuals must pay for warrants or bail money over the phone.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that they do not solicit payments via phone calls and would never instruct individuals to make payments through gift cards at retailers like Walmart.

The scam involves various tactics, including having an alleged family member call the victim, pleading for money.

The Sheriff’s Office advises residents to be vigilant and not to provide personal information or make payments if they receive such calls.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office directly to verify whether a family member is actually in the Correctional Facility.

The community is urged to spread the word about this scam to prevent others from falling victim.

The Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the fraudulent calls and working to track down those responsible.
