Clinton man arrested after shooting, victim airlifted to hospital

CLINTON — A local woman was airlifted to a Bangor hospital with a gunshot wound to the neck after an incident at a Clinton residence, police said.

The Waterville Regional Communications Center received a distress call at 6 p.m. on Oct. 19 from 791 Hill Road.

Responding officers from the Clinton Police Department, along with Clinton Fire Rescue, found the injured female, who was promptly given medical aid and then transported by Life Flight of Maine due to the severity of her injuries.

Sgt. Roger Smith, the investigating officer, reported that the suspect, Andrew Fertig, 69, was taken into custody at the scene without resistance.

Fertig was arrested on charges of Domestic Violence Elevated Aggravated Assault, a Class A crime, after being medically cleared at a local hospital for high intoxication levels.

He is currently being held at the Kennebec County Jail awaiting his court appearance.

The victim’s name has not been released due to the domestic nature of the incident.

The Clinton Police Department was assisted by the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office and the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not disclosed any additional information at this time.
