GROTON — After receiving a threat concerning the Fitch vs. Norwich Free Academy High School football game, Groton police and school officials postponed Thursday night’s game and rescheduled it for Friday afternoon with heightened security measures.

The Groton Police Department was alerted about potential safety issues at 1:45 p.m. on Thursday by Norwich Free Academy security.

These concerns, amplified by social media posts, led to the collaborative decision to postpone the game originally set for 6:00 p.m. that day.

Chief L. J. Fusaro praised the students who reported the alarming social media activity to the Fitch High School Resource Officer.

The posts in question were made by individuals unaffiliated with Fitch High School or the event.

Fitch High School Principal Matthew Z. Brown outlined new security protocols for Friday’s rescheduled game at 4:00 p.m., including a spectator limit for varsity players, mandatory photo ID checks, and admission only for students with valid school IDs.

Tickets for the game remain available on GoFan and previous purchases will be honored for the new date.

The concession stand will also be operational during the game.

The Groton Police Department encourages the community to report any concerning social media posts to authorities.

The rescheduled event will be closely monitored to ensure the safety of all attendees.
