Cumberland County sheriff warns of phone scammers posing as law enforcement

1 min read

PORTLAND — The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office issued a public warning today about a group of scammers who are impersonating law enforcement officials to deceive residents.

The scammers have been calling local individuals, fraudulently identifying themselves as members of the sheriff’s office, and the phone number they’re using has been manipulated to appear as if the calls are coming from the office’s official number.

Authorities clarified that the sheriff’s office does not make phone calls to notify individuals about warrants nor demands payment over the phone for warrants or any other reason.

The public is urged to be cautious and to trust their instincts if they receive a call that seems suspicious.

The sheriff’s office advises anyone who receives such a call to hang up immediately and to contact the office’s actual phone line to confirm whether the call was legitimate.

This proactive measure is to ensure that residents do not fall victim to these fraudulent schemes which are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
