One dead, two injured in Williamstown interstate crash

WILLIAMSTOWN — A single-vehicle crash on Interstate 89 left one person dead and two others injured on Oct. 16.

At approximately 3:40 p.m., Vermont State Police responded to a report of an accident near mile marker 42.4 northbound, where they discovered a 1995 Subaru Legacy had veered off the road into a ditch.

Clear weather and dry road conditions were reported at the time.

The vehicle’s front passenger, Beverly Emerson, 42, of Randolph, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither she nor the driver, Kristopher Steponik, 38, also from Randolph, were wearing seat belts when the crash occurred.

Steponik and a 15-year-old passenger, who was wearing a seat belt, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Central Vermont Medical Center for treatment.

Local fire departments and rescue teams from Barre Town, Barre City, Williamstown, and Berlin assisted at the scene of the crash, which resulted in total damage to the vehicle.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
